Of course they were still functional enough to take my $$$ for Magic World...so at least that part of the company works.

			OpenQuest 2 June 2013 Update

Hi all

OK been a month since I contacted you about OQ2's progress, so some form of update is in order.

Last month I thought we were about to cross the finishing line regarding checking errors. However its turned out that we need more time to fine tune the document. Being realistic I'm now aiming for an August release, by the very latest.

Along side the final check on OQ2, I'm putting the finishing touches on the new content for Life and Death and The Savage North. Here Be Dragons is also about to go into layout.

I hope to have more to show in the next couple of weeks, so expect an update then.

Thank you for your patience.

In the meantime here's a preview of The Savage North's revised cover by Jon Hodgson :)

Regards

I'm preparing an historical Japanese horror campaign set in the Heian Period, and I'm trying to decide which Power system to use for the Shinto priests. I've already decided to use the Psychic Abilities system for the Buddhist priests/monks, but I envision the Shinto priests a little differently. While Buddhism entails a great deal of mental discipline and meditation, which seems to lend itself naturally to Psychic powers, Shinto is more about the channeling or invoking of Kami (nature spirits/gods). Moreover, I want to run a very low-magic setting. I want my Shinto priests to be able to perform rituals such as exorcisms, and I want them to be able to invoke their guardian Kami in desperate situations as a last ditch effort, but that's about it. At first, I had considered the sorcerer power, but sorcerers don't have anything akin to exorcism. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Typing the notes from last weekend I'm totally psyched out on our epic RuneQuest Dragon Age campaign and roleplaying in general. People who haven't tried this stuff sure are missing a lot!

Having been a bit frustrated over all the political intrigue in the nation's capital, the GM decided to give us a little change of pace by sending us on a more traditional search and rescue adventure, in the course of which we, among other things, managed to save a barbarian village in the mountains from an evil horde of uncharacteristically intelligent darkspawn. (Think orcs etc.) It sure was good to be able to tell who was evil and who was not, things like this tend to get rather muddy in the mire of politics.

The heroic defense at the Battle of Redhold sure was something to remember, but what was even more notorius is what I'll be typing next. On the way back to the city on the other side of the country was fought the much smaller but even more satisfying Siege of Tavistock.

You see, this bastard of a highwayman had decided that he wanted to be a noble too, so he had started a campaign to seize some of the lands and loyalty of the freeholders from the domain of his half brother. Unfortunately for him, our four heroes were in good terms with said nobleman, so on the way back, when we noticed the ass had had some good men decapitated and their heads struck on the tips of long poles, we had enough.

So my normally benevolent and cautious healer made up a plan, had to spend some time talking the others into it, but finally managed to sway them. We found a new tower fortification where we surmised the bandit was hiding, attacked it from four sides, killed some of the guards, a traitor mage who had joined up and seized the hapless upstart, who had spent months building his plan and support only to be foiled by a motley group of adventurers, who happened to pass through his newly conquered lands on the way back from a mission. Took about five minutes. Glorious!

Something I can't grasp at the moment (among many other things), is how a GM knows how strong/powerful to make an NPC or group of NPC's in order to challenge the players.

Obviously D&D has the concept of levels to do this. In BRP, if you had a group of players and had to whip up a random NPC on the fly....how would you do it? What benchmarks on the players sheets would you go off of?

Thanks for your time!

Can anyone explain why the Design Mechanism Runequest has so few reviews (in fact only 3 listed on their own site: http://www.thedesignmechanism.com/runequest.php)...yet a D&D retroclone like Dungeon Crawl Classics has about 30 reviews on their page (http://www.goodmangames.com/5070preview.html)?

Google shows about the same ratio of hits if you do searches there.

So, I'm just curious what is or isn't going on? Maybe Runequest people are so busy playing that they don't have time to review? Or is really that few BRP/Runequest players? Or none of the above?

(I have the Design Mechanism version and am also waiting for the updated Classic Fantasy and also Openquest 2....but I'm deep in Pathfinder country and haven't actually played in ages...so I'm not a good source for reviews either).

We've all seen similar scenarios in the comics or on assorted animated series: the hero of our favorite superhero title is confronted by a group of opponents whose members were given their abilities and are sponsored by a corporate entity. However, the largest private employer in the world isn't Stark Enterprises, Star Labs or Lexcorp. It's Walmart, rural dime store chain grown into a global phenomenon. It had to happen and today it has; as part of its exclusive promotion deal of the upcoming Man of Steel movie, Walmart has named its official superhero team (drawn and scripted by DC Comics!). Each of these metahumans is based on a real employee.

A Look at 2013 / June cover of Walmart World magazine

From left to right, they are:

Ninja -- loss prevention specialist skilled at fading into the background to detect shoplifters (how she does that in a slinky catsuit must involve the use of her powers)

Fire Man -- emergency response and rescue expert; sometimes carries a fire extinguisher on his back

The Giver -- encourages volunteerism and charitable giving in the face of natural and national disasters

Path-Maker -- career guidance manager; his flowing cape billows about him dramatically whether there is a noticeable wind or not

OK, here's the contest. Pick a character. Stat him or her up using the Big Gold Book and/or Superworld or Worlds of Wonder. Include a description of the character's powers, outlook, and origin. The winner gets a Marvel Comics-style No Prize. ;)

BTW, a fifth member of the team (not pictured on the cover) is Shirley Shrinkage, Walmart's first superhero, who gained her powers in 1986 after encountering a barrel of radioactive waste. Also a loss prevention specialist, she's an energetic, thin, middle-aged woman with long, wavy blonde hair. Her red leotard is offset by blue headband, cape, gloves, shorts, and boots with wide cuffs.

Hello all,

Hello all,

This may be the incorrect place to ask this--if so, please kindly direct me to the correct forum--but I was hoping someone could help me understand what a Strength score means in Superworld. I understand it's the same as BRP, but I could be wrong.

I am re-reading the rules to Superworld and I don't see that there is a Strength table anywhere in the book. I don't really understand what, for example, a score of 12 means: how much can I lift? Is a Strength of 24 double the lifting capacity of 12? Additionally, I don't see where a Size score gives a certain weight. I see they give the "full weight" of an automobile as Size 50, but I'm not sure how much that is supposed to be since automobiles can vary quite a bit. Is there anyplace I can find an example, i.e., Size 50 = approximately 3,000 lbs. and/or Strength 50 = lifting capacity 3,000 lbs.?

There is a Resistance Table, which I need to use to compare Strength to Size to determine whether I can lift something, but without knowing actual weights and measurements it is all very abstract to me. Am I missing or overlooking something? Or can some kind soul direct me to a place where such information is available?

Yours truly,
Matt
