I knew there were clubs there, but just thought that it was a marginal enough game that lots of people wouldn't necessarily get the joke. If I made a soccer (football) joke, then I'd expect all of you to get it and half the Americans to look at me cross-eyed, though it's pretty well known here now...just not executed so well.

We actually have that stereotype too. It may not be about humor so much as just being very rigid, extremely literal, etc.

Hockey = Ice Hockey However, the thought of teenage girls in short skirts playing field hockey, has a certain appeal, or at least would have 20 years ago. Next, let's debate "football" or "football". (I'm one of those weird individuals who really likes both, a lot. I cut out of work on select Tuesdays and Wednesdays to catch Champions League games live.)
