Default CR Poll!

We are talking about a Cthulhu Rising with the Lovecraft serial numbers filed off.

If your not sure, go to the CTHULHU RISING website and make up an opinion first! (E.g., pie is not an option in this poll!)

I visited the site earlier, and was very impressed, especially with the ship rules. It looks like it would be great. I am reading 'Destinys Forge' right now and was statting things in the novel in game terms from material on the site. It seems a natural with or without the Cthulu material. I definitely think it could be a home run for the BRP system.

I checked out the website after the discussion here. I like it as well. It has room for much potential and variety. I voted yes for it to be the default sci-fi setting.

OK, it does look good. Very detailed and very reasonable.

I haven't gone through the rules, yet, but the ones I have seen look pretty good as well.

The only things that rankle, in my opinion, are the fact that everyone is an Investigator (when the last type of game I want to play is an investigative one, this is the second reason why I don't like CoC) and the inclusion of the Cthulhu Mythos (which is the main reason why I don't like CoC).

So, for me, this would make a good campaign setting for a SciFi BRP game if they forgot that everyone was an Investigator and if they forgot the Cuthulhu Mythos.

Having said that, there is definitely a place for the "Aliens were/are on Earth" model, with ancient remains on far-away planets. Even finding some of the Chthulhu Mythos creatures on other planets would be fun. Conspiracies are always good for a laugh as well, with aliens trying to take control of organisations/people/religions.

But, the "Oh, no, it's so scary and terrible that my mind is going!" idea just doesn't work for me. It might have been fine in the 1920s when new ideas such as Relativity and Quantum Mechanics were changing how people thought of the universe and how astronomy showed the universe was a lot bigger than people thought. However, now and in the future, I can't see it being a factor.

So, if it had the Cthulhu bits well and truly filed off, it would work well for me.

If only we could have everything included in a single ZIP file, rather than having to hunt through all the links to get information on colonies etc.

I am with you. Playing scouts and/or archaeologists on newly discovered (by us) planets with ancient ruins...yeah. You can have a little horror without the entire Mythos, if you want, and that is what I would like to see as well.

I like the gun-bunny option for a bug-hunt campaign. Space Marines vs. aliens is awsome. I was teased with Aliens.

Ottomancer say he's ready to file off the mythos serial numbers if it had a chance of becoming an official BRP setting.

Everyone is not an investigator in CR. Maybe the civilians are more "investigator" like, but the corporate and marine characters seem to be way more combat oriented. Should be easy to make more open-ended though.

I looked at the site a few weeks ago when it first came up here and agree that it looks like a really cool setting. I pretty much agree with what Soltakss has to say.
File off the CoC numbers, expand the setting a bit to allow for more types of characters and you have something I'd love to play.

I'm not sure about default Sci Fi setting though, I'm not sure BRP should have any of those.

The investigator thing is a red herring. It's the generic term in Call of Cthulhu for Player Characters, same as "Keeper" means GM. My memory of both the Civilian and Military scenarios I've read from the CR site is that you could substitute the term "Troubleshooter" quite easily. There's an element of investigation in them - but there's an element of investigation in Steading of the Hill Giant Chief, and frankly its hard to do a modern or futuristic scenario that DOESN'T pose some sort of mysetry / conundrum for the characters to solve...

Now, having said that, I'm really note sure ANOTHER variant time period for CoC is a good idea as a BRP supplement. What BRP needs is settings that stand on their own, not that borrow from Chaosium's other line. In that regard, I quite agree that "de-mythosing" CR is the better approach. In fact, I'd go further, and up the Alastair Reynolds (one major plot thread in Revelation Space is about an archeological investigation) / Ken McLeod (Newton's Wake features "combat archeology") influences.

What I'd like to see is a) Cthulhu Rising (and Cthulhu Invictus) released as proper Call of Cthulhu supplements / variants as Cthulhu Dark Ages was and b) at least one full blooded SF setting for BRP from Chaosium (and I think John Ossaway would be the ideal chap to write it...).

But I'll settle for a de-Mythosed Cthulhu Rising for BRP.

I want Starship Troopers not Scooby Doo.

Traders/Marines/Settlers/Pirates/Freedom Fighters/Researchers/Bounty Hunters are all good ideas for sessions and are classic SciFi staples.
