Likewise the Sergeant Bilko!

It all grew out of an idea I had for running a Roman Legion campaign a few years back. The idea was for the PCs to join the Legion and get send foff for thier year of basic training. Knowing my players, I knoew some would try to wheel and deal to make some money on the side. Fortunately, that fits the Legions fairly well. At least when they were not campaigning.

Then, being a fan of the old Phil Silver show, I considered thiking the who thing one step beyond. The idea of the Legionaries having to deal with a "dragon" (like a deinychus) that is disrupting farm life, all while trying to avoiding hurting it so they can sell if to the circus for a bundle.

TRose's Britain setting isn't a bad idea either. Probably more political than Borderlands was, too, with all the tribes and feuding that went on. In some ways the Lfe og Ceasar models the Boderlands campaign nicely. He got himself assaigned as a govenor ans used it as an opportunity to win glory (and avoid credtiors long enough the raise some denarii).

Don't worry, I was interested and amused as I got it (first time around) and I'm sure I can't be the only one from this (eastern) side of the Atlantic who did. Ice hockey has been heard of over here, and we're not all entirely humourless, y'know. (And I hope any of our German friends reading appreciate my restraint from further comment at this point... )

I would use Britain mostly cause I dont know much about Morocco during Roman times or for that The border area between Eygypt and Nubia. And was thinking of doing it about when Caligula was in power so the official does not really want to be noticed and in fact is hoping they forget about him in Rome as he rather not come to the attention of Emperor Psychopath . Of course if he does a bad job he will still draw attention so he has to walk a tightrope there
and if you have your players join the Legion, is going to be on of Crassus's legions so they can see the world, or at least China?

Yeah, after I read back over my comment, I realized that there are plenty on that side of the Atlantic that'd probably catch the referenced. (However, we seem to have a large number from the UK and France...at least the ones who've put their location in the header, and neither places are hotbeds of Hockey.) In fact there are jokes about needing a critical number of Russians on an NHL squad to win the Stanley Cup anymore, and decent numbers of Swedes, Finds, and Czechs. That and basketball have exported from this part of the world pretty well.

OK, now it's my turn to ask for an explanation. What's the restraint relative to our German friends?

If the goal comes off during play, play is stopped. There's an obvious temptation for the defense to do just that in certain situations intentionally. If the goal comes off in normal play, you stop play, reset the goal, and restart. If it comes off intentionally, it's a penalty, which means time (2 minutes) playing a player down for the offending team.

English doesn't help here so much as being from the northern US or Canada, or for that matter probably some northern European countries, after I think about it.
Thanks for the explanation.
I knew the rule but I didn't understood your sentence came from hockey. You know, there are also hockey clubs (not as good, I concur) in France, Switzerland or Italy.

A common joke/slur is that Germans have no sense of humour, but I heroically restrained myself from mentioning that - nearly. At least you were spared any political side-swipe about us all being part of Germany soon...

Not hotbeds of hockey? Every secondary school in the UK used to have teenage girls in short skirts wielding sticks and playing hockey in Games Lessons being watched by teenage boys and men of a certain age.

Oh, you mean Ice Hockey. Well, that's different, then ........

I knew there were clubs there, but just thought that it was a marginal enough game that lots of people wouldn't necessarily get the joke. If I made a soccer (football) joke, then I'd expect all of you to get it and half the Americans to look at me cross-eyed, though it's pretty well known here now...just not executed so well.

We actually have that stereotype too. It may not be about humor so much as just being very rigid, extremely literal, etc.

Hockey = Ice Hockey However, the thought of teenage girls in short skirts playing field hockey, has a certain appeal, or at least would have 20 years ago. Next, let's debate "football" or "football". (I'm one of those weird individuals who really likes both, a lot. I cut out of work on select Tuesdays and Wednesdays to catch Champions League games live.)
