Geography - The Green, Akershule & Sky Mtn.

Conserning the world geography, I think maybe a good idea would be to start with what we know, and then expand from there. I would like to try and make an open CC3 map suggestion the coming weekend, with the features we allready have clear, but with lots of room for additions once more ideas come along.

So, in the middle of the world is a conic vulcano, the Sky Mountain. How tall is it, and how wide is the base? The desert around it, how big is that? I imagine the desert being surrounded on most sides by water, so we can have the boiling water effect that produce the rainfall further out (and especially the green). What do you see here?

The Green - How big? What kind of trees? What lands surround it?

Akershule - Surrounding terrain? Any mountains nearby, or hills, or forrests?

As mentioned elsewhere, there are some features I would very much appre-

ciate, because they would make it easy for me to link my Pharos IV setting

with the Shared World:

- mountains on one side (the north side ?) of The Green, with at least one

major river flowing from there through The Green to the sea,

- a major sea on the other side (the south side ?) of The Green, preferably

with a long coastline and a depth of at least 1,000 meters.

The mountains could well be "foothills" (I don't remember the right word) of

Sky Mountain, and could reach from Sky Mountain through a desert area all

the way to The Green, with the last "chain" of mountains in or under The

Green.

On another thought: I have made a list of the races that have been proposed

as inhabitants of The Green, and if we want to include all or most of them,

The Green should have truly "epic" dimensions, in my opinion at least 1,000

kilometers from the mountains to the sea.

This would give the different races and cultures some "elbow room", and it

would prevent The Green from becoming something like a "zoo", as many of

the published D&D settings, where the capitals of hostile realms sometimes

were almost within "arrow range".

Are you going to redo the map Frogskinner posted or are you going to do a whole new one?

I also believe the green will need to be quite large. I kind of made up the sketchs with the impression that it would be quite small about the size of European country or American state. It kind of grew though. Now, I was thinking of keeping the far Northwestern corner as my little corner of the Green, further away from civilization. To the east the Green could widen out and become much more vast and full of peoples, more like Soltakss' Peoples of the Green write-up.

In the original frogskinner map the western section section of the Green kind of expands and the mountain fade up towards the north. Could that corner be narrowed somewhat instead and have the mountains hook back to the sea. I attached a photo of a quick rough. I don't know if you can tell what is going on there, but that may give an idea of the basic shape.

Yep, this is exactly what I imagined The Green to look like on a map.

If we follow Rurik's description in his Portal entry in the Wiki, east of The

Green would follow, from west to east:

- a mountain range

- hills

- the fertile valley of the River Jule with Akershule

- arid plains

- a desert

- the Sky Mountain

while hills and another mountain range would be located north and north-

east of Akershule.

The Green therefore would be surrounded by mountains on three sides, tur-

ning it into a wet basin that opens towards the sea - which, in my opinion,

would fit perfectly well.

In the original frogskinner map...

Say what you like about me or my maps, but get the name right... :P

Britain has been infiltrated by soviet agents to the highest levels. They control the BBC, the main political party leaderships, NHS & local council executives, much of the police, most newspapers and the utility companies. Of course the EU is theirs, through-and-through. And they are among us - a pervasive evil, like Stasi.

I thought to create the map after the ideas people have for the green. Adjusting the map to the idea.

I attached a photo of a quick rough. I don't know if you can tell what is going on there, but that may give an idea of the basic shape.

Actually no... Could you make a bigger one? ;)

This map will also just be a suggestion of course, maybe we can try out several ones, and see which fit peoples ideas the most.

Whoops! sorry bout that:o

I'll try to get a little bigger pic here. I have been squishing the picture size down to upload them. I have always had a scanner, but after years of no use, all of a sudden it has gone haywire. Instead I have used a camera and that takes quit large pictures. I was afraid they would overwhelm the download size.

The map is about the third one I have done and the Shape should be about right for the western half of the Green. to the south east, off the edge of the map the green should widen a great deal even though it looks like it is narrowing on the map.

I suppose that the rivers flowing through The Green and the River Jule flowing

through Akershule flow into the same sea, so that Puck's Corsair City on the

coast of The Green and Rurik's mouth of the Jule are on the same coast, and

the corsairs prey on the trade coming from and going to Akershule ?

Also, the barbarians living in the hills (and mountains ?) west of Akershule are

the same as (or related to) the tribes (of as yet unknown race, but perhaps

Trogod) which inhabit the mountains on the eastern border of The Green ?

That is the way i'd kind of pictured it. From east to west - Sun Mountain, Desert, plains/stepps, Portal/River Jule, Foothills, Mountains, Green. That is the rough placement I was picturing. More mountains to the north of Portal, probably a branch off of the same range as borders on the Green.

Hmm, this possibly creates a problem with the boiling oceans creating the moisture for the Green. Will think about that. Maybe the sun mountain/boiling ocean should be to the north or south instead.

Same barbarians seafarers is exactly what I had in mind. I look forward to exotic items and races from the green visiting the markets of Portal.

I was kind of thinking that the Green might be a ways off from the heart of the civilized part of the world. The pirates would sail seasonally great distances for raiding and traiding and then retreat back to their hidy holes in the swampy vastness of the Green.

Soltakss Discussed having several cities in his post on the Green. Maybe the eastern Green could have some cities while the western hook area would remain rather unexplored and isolated...good place for pirates to hide.

I think the moisture for The Green should be no problem. With mountain

ranges on three sides, and rivers from all three mountain ranges flowing

down into and through the same basin, The Green should receive enough

water, I think.

As for the pirates, I think the distance between Corsair city and Akershule

could still be quite great, with the foothills and mountains and half of the

river valley between The Green and the mouth of the Jule.

Cool!

I keep getting distances and sizes all messed up in my head. When I drew that original map of the green up I was thinking of a whole different scale(much) smaller. Then I look at the world map and how big it and Oy! The Green is as big as Europe.

Big is good though.

Maybe he spawns them then skins them.
Spawn 'em, then make everyone wear frog-skins would be more like it.

Wear? Oh. And I though they went well with bacon bits and sour cream.

They have. No one noticed.

I just get a kick out of the idea of someone training frogs to haul cargo. :D

O.K that last one did it! I think the first deity for the Green will be a Totemistic, Trogod, two headed, frog god. One head is called Frogspawner who represents Amphibian fertility, the other, Frogskinner who represents Amphibian death.

Yep, and there will be the incredibly evil Cult Of Spawners and Skinners,

with lots of Spawning Spells and Skinning Spells, and thousands of trained

Giant War Frogs, most of them used to pull frog-shaped war chariots !

Thanks guys. It helps to start the day - hauling out of bed and finding you have become a god! :)

I guess folks'll start bugging me for Divine Interventions now, though... :ohwell:

PS: "incredibly evil" too - nice! :P>:->
